“Indha Veenaikku Theriyadhu”, the title song of Rail Sneham, composed by VS Narasimhan.Let me list a couple of well known title songs that we might have seen play regularly in our TVs. Listen to my rendition of Raghupathey Rama in Sahana, a composition of Thyagaraja.Įven in television serials, this ragam seems to have been a favourite for title songs. Enna Perum Thavam, song on Kanchi Mahaperiyava by Periyasamy Thooran.Velavane Unakku, a tami composition of MDR.Sari Evvare Ma Janaki - I found this composition in Sahana, but there is a slight doubt as to whose composition it could be the charanam has lyrics “ tirupathi pura varadha venkatesa”, which could be attributed to Tirupathi Narayanaswamy or to Patnam Subramaniya Iyer.Rama Ika Nannu by Patnam Subramaniya Iyer.Sri Vatapi Ganapathiye, Chittam Irangadha by Papanasam Sivan.Manamuka Valanu by Harikesanallur Muthiah Bagavathar.Sri Kamalambikayam, the 7th avarna of Navavarnam and Abhayambayam, the 7th avarna of Abhayamba Navavarnam by Muthuswamy Dikshitar.Ee Vasudha (from the Kovur Pancharathnam), Raghupathe Rama, Vandhanamu Raghunandhana, Giripai, Sri Rama Sri Rama and so on, over 9 compositions by Thyagaraja.Karunimpa varnam by Thiruvotriyur Thyagayyar. There is a Hindustani raga called Sahana too, however it sounds very different from the Sahana treatment in Carnatic music. The Ga note is unique to this ragam which is sung slightly above the sadharana gandharam but below the antara gandharam in certain phrases, thereby earning it the name “ Trisanku Gandharam”. It is also classified as rakthi ragam as it has high melodic scope. There are other phrases sung as aarohanam / avarohanam too as this ragam is mostly phrase oriented. Sahana is the janyam of 28th melakartha, Harikamboji.Īvarohanam – S N2 D2 N2 D2 P M1 G3 M1 R2 G3 R2 S Although it contains all the 7 notes, it is not a parent raga either in the Katapayadhi or the Asampurna system of ragas. Sahana is a vakra raga (meaning zigzag scale) in both ascending and descending. I imagine it would be fitting for someone sitting on an easy chair, one leg folded over other, hands folded over your head, eyes half closed and casually nodding, listening to Sahana. This post is about a soothing yet vakra ragam called Sahana. Ragapedia is a series of posts I am writing, one Carnatic Raga per post, on my understanding of the ragam, carnatic compositions in that ragam and how it has been dealt within films.
